For those of you who want to root and install custom ROM on your Motorola Android smartphone, you need to unlock the bootloader. Unlocking bootloader allows you to install custom recovery such as ClockworkMod (CWM) or TWRP recovery, both can custom root your Motorola device and also allow you to install ROM.
This method works on most Android Motorola smartphones like Moto X (1st and 2nd generation), Moto G (1st and 2nd generation, not AT & T or Verizon, however), Moto E, Moto X / Droid Maxx (Developer Edition), photo Q 4G LTE Droid Razr M / HD, Razr i, Atrix HD (Developer Edition), Electrify M, and future devices that support bootloader unlocking Motorola website.
For users Moto X, if you have AT & T or Verizon, you will not be able to use this method as AT & T and Verizon have locked bootloader (because they do not like you play with your own phone you already paid full price for)
So if you have a device that supports bootloader unlock (and even if you do not, you can try it and see if it is unlocked or not), we will go ahead and unlock the bootloader.
I will use a Moto X 2nd generation, but the instructions are the same for all Motorola phones.
You can use Windows, Mac or Linux do that. I made a video tutorial for Windows, but you can use the slight change in the code for Mac or Linux.

Step 1. Turn your Motorola smartphone then hold down the Volume Down and Power buttons and for approximately 10 seconds
Step 2 . Release the buttons and you should see a character-based fastboot menu. This is called fastboot / Mode menu.
Step 3. Connect a micro USB cable for your Motorola phone to your computer.
