As someone who has traveled to over 6 different countries in the last 6 months, I can tell you that US carriers say are the best for data and voice overseas

no doubt in my mind, the best US carrier for overseas travel is T-Mobile. T-Mobile provides free unlimited data 2G / Edge and 20 cents per minute in most countries and they support more than 140 countries. If you take a look to other carriers, they will charge ridiculously high amounts for international data. Although not even 3G with T-Mobile, you will get unlimited 2G data that works very well for low bandwidth applications like e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, installation, etc ... etc ... In less, no matter what country you go, you will always have quick access to your communication applications. Now you will not be able to stream videos or anything that requires more bandwidth, but you can leave those to your WiFi hotel or take a prepaid SIM card in the target country. I am able to get the full signal in Canada, Ireland, France, Spain, South Korea and Thailand are the countries I was traveling for this year.
In addition, T-Mobile offers WiFi calls abroad. long as you have a WiFi connection, you do not have to pay 20 cents per minute but it will be as if you were calls in the United States If you have unlimited plan, this will means free calls as you have WiFi. also you will be able to use your US number for incoming and outgoing calls.
