For those who want to install custom ROM on your Android smartphone or tablet, you certainly want to learn how to back up and restore ROM. This works on most Android smartphones with installed TWRP recovery, including Galaxy Note 4/3/2/1, S5 / S4 / S3 / S2, Note Edge, HTC One, Nexus 6/5/4/7/10 , and many others .
You can use ClockworkMod (CWM) or TWRP recovery for this. In this tutorial, I will use the TWRP recovery to a backup ROM and restore the ROM but the CWM Recovery should be similar but with different menus.
First, you must have a TWRP Recovery installed. If not, please install the TWRP recovery first using Flashify.
Step 1. Reboot into recovery on your Android device using the QuickStart application.
* Note: If for any reason you do not have a rooted Android device, you can manually start the recovery (for Samsung Galaxy devices , turn off the phone and hold Volume Up + Home + power Center for 5 seconds, HTC / Nexus devices, turn off the phone and hold Volume Down + power button and select recovery). If you have another device, try googling on how to enter recovery mode.
Step 2. Once in TWRP recovery, select "Backup".
Step 3. Select "System" and "Data". This will backup all your OS with your settings, applications, application data, but will be content backup of your storage / internal SD card such as photos and personal videos.
(optional) You can backup ROM to your internal storage, micro SD card, or a USB flash drive. I recommend using an OTG cable for backup on your USB flash drive (or you can use OTG USB Flash drive) as backup ROM can be quite large (between 1-3GB) and your backup ROM will not take space on the storage of your phone.
