Almost one year after the announcement back at CES 2015, ASUS has finally released its new Zenfone Zoom, smartphone world's thinnest integrated with optical zoom. I've always felt that having an optical zoom on a smartphone was the wave of the future and finally got to unbox this bad boy.
We saw several Samsung smartphones zoom before, but This is the first smartphone we've seen without the bulk of a compact camera with optical zoom while drowned in inside. What makes the special Zenfone Zoom is that you can have the power of 28-84mm (35mm equivalent) zoom range without the bulk of a zoom lens. I personally own the Sony RX100M4, which is an excellent $ 1,000 camera with 24-70mm zoom range, but it is definitely two times bigger than the Zenfone Zoom and I do not really like to carry around in my pocket much. The Zenfone Zoom really closes the gap between a compact camera and a smartphone allowing the user to take pictures from a distance without loss of quality
digital zoom existed on 99% of smartphones that are just horrible and all they really do is flush your original photo to give you low resolution unusable pictures. The only way to make best smartphones cameras (so you can replace your compact camera / DSLR) is to add optical zoom and ASUS is the first company to do so without paralyzing the experience of the smartphone.
Now the Zenfone Zoom is great, but it is not without flaws. Opening the camera starts F2.7 to F4.8, which is spectacular and will not give you the depth of field- / bokeh you have been used for something like F1.8 or F1.9. For video, 4K is not available and you are stuck with 1080P.
I'll probably have to do some more tests but for now, I am actually very satisfied its zoom capabilities. During my dinner, I compared the pictures I took with my note 5 / 6P Nexus photos taken with my Zenfone Zoom (of course zoomed in). The result was pretty amazing. While Note 5 and Nexus 6P struggled because it does not offer optical zoom, I am able to capture perfectly detailed pictures using the zoom on my Zenfone Zoom. If you need to zoom your camera and you can not move closer to the subject (perhaps you bought the last line tickets to the concert), the zoom helps out a lot and you would be able to capture pictures otherwise not possible. As its name suggests, this smartphone is not for everyone, but for those who want to have the power to zoom and not lose the quality of their photos
